Rouses Point School Counseling Department

Elementary Counseling

Elementary counseling is the art of helping children develop their resources, resolve problems, make decisions, and facilitate personal growth and development. As a counselor in the school, it is my purpose to assist children at as early a time as possible to promote successful academic, social and emotional development.

Some of the issues addressed in individual and group counseling include:

  • Academic success

  • Peer Relationships

  • Divorce

  • Family issues

  • Goal Setting

  • Feelings

Initiating Counseling Services

Who is eligible for services:

Individual and group counseling is available for all students. Students may be referred by parents, teachers, school staff, or students can request counseling on their own.

Can I refer my child for counseling?

A parent simply needs to call the school counselor, teacher, or principal to request counseling services for their child.

Will I be notified if my child is receiving counseling services?

When a child is referred for on going regular counseling by someone other than a parent, the parents will be notified.

Confidentiality

Maintaining confidentiality is vital for students to build trust with the counselor. Therefore, all sessions will be kept confidential. The only exceptions to this are when safety of the child or another person is jeopardized or when the child gives permission to share information.

The Counseling Process

After receiving a referral I will begin meeting with the student to get an understanding of the presenting concern. After gathering the necessary information, I will work with the student in setting goals and planning appropriate actions to be taken. After a plan is initiated the student and I will evaluate the progress, and determine the need for changes and eventual termination. Individual and group counseling sessions last approximately 30 minutes and are scheduled once or twice a week.

The Parents' Role

Parents play an important role in their child's counseling. It is important that parents respect their child's privacy and at the same time support their efforts. General information and suggestions may be shared with parents and teachers in an effort to maximize the benefits of counseling services. At times, outside counseling may be more appropriate than school counseling and should be pursued by the parent.

Primary Mental Health Project

The Primary Project is a school- based prevention program using expressive play to help children (preschool through third grade) adjust to school, gain confidence and focus on learning. A highly trained adult, called a child associate, provides weekly support and encouragement which helps children function more effectively and become successful learners. Primary Project is a highly successful prevention program found in over 2,000 schools nationally.

Parents, teachers and other school staff work together to select children who are beginning to show signs of difficulty in the classroom or children with other life-stressors to participate in the program. Parental permission is needed for participation in Primary Project.
