The NY State Education Department requires that students must have satisfactory lab reports that represent a minimum of 1200 minutes of lab work before they are permitted to take any science Regents exam. “Satisfactory” means that a student must have an overall lab average of 65% or better and must have participated in at least 1200 minutes of laboratory activities. If a student does not pass the lab portion of the Earth Science course, he or she will not be able to take the NY State Earth Science Regents exam.
In order to graduate all students must take and pass at least one science regents exam. It can be Earth Science, Living Environment, Chemistry, of Physics. Students entering Grade 9 in Sept. 2007 must pass 5 required regents exams ( and score a minimum of 65 on 4 of these exams).
Mrs. Houle's lab Report Requirements:
In order to receive a passing grade on a lab, you must show in your written lab report that you have understood the objective of the lab, you have done the lab procedure correctly, and have understood the key Earth Science concepts that the lab demonstrates.
Lab reports will be graded on a 100 point system with a grading rubric that explains how the points were determined for each lab. 20% of your course grade will be determined by your lab report scores.
Any lab that receives a failing grade will be returned to you for corrections. You have one week to complete your corrections and resubmit your lab. If you need help on your lab report, please see me for help.
Lab reports must be handed in on the day they are due. Late reports will be penalized as follows:
One week late = -20 points
Two weeks late = No credit
Keeping your Completed Labs Safe:
The NY State Education Department requires that all students' lab reports be kept on file for a year after the student takes a science Regents exam. Therefore it is very important that you keep track of your own graded labs throughout the year. To help everyone manage this, you will be given a lab folder and a secure place to store your completed labs. It is your responsibility to make sure all graded labs are placed in your personal lab folder so they will not be misplaced. It is extremely important that all graded labs and lab folders remain in the classroom. If you lose a lab report, even after it is graded, you will receive NO CREDIT for that lab.
The NY State Education Department also
requires that all students’ lab reports must be kept on file for a year after
the science Regents exam is taken. Therefore it is very important that
everyone keeps track of his or her own graded labs throughout the year. To help
everyone manage this, every student will be given a lab folder and a secure
place to store their completed labs. It is the student’s responsibility to
make sure all graded labs are placed in their personal lab folder so that no lab
will be misplaced. It is mandatory that all graded labs and lab folders remain
in the classroom. If a student loses a lab report, even after it is graded,
they will receive NO CREDIT for that lab!
