NY
STATE GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS:
To receive a NY State Regents diploma, you must earn 3 science credits, and pass at least 1 science Regents exam.
Before you can take any science Regents exam you must pass the lab portion of the course. The NY State Education Department requires a minimum of 1200 minutes of lab work and satisfactory lab reports that show proof of completion of this lab requirement. This is an extremely important mandatory part of all regents science classses!! No one is allowed to take any science Regents exam unless the lab portion of the course is successfully completed!!
To receive a NY State Regents diploma you must pass at least 1 Physical Setting science course (either Earth Science, Chemistry, or Physics) and the Living Environment course. All Regents science courses alternate between 80 minute classes on one day, and 40 minute classes the next day. During many of the 80 minute classes, labs will be conducted. For most of these labs, you will be working with a lab partner or a group of no more than 4 students. You will have the opportunity to discuss the lab questions with your partners, and ask me questions. Most of the time you will also write up and hand in your lab reports during these 80 minute time slots.
In June students that have successfully passed all
of the lab requirements take the Earth Science Regents exam. This is
a two-part test.
1)
The first part is the lab portion, which is usually
taken during the first week of June. It tests your lab skills. Your score on
this part of the Earth Science
Regents exam accounts for 15% of
your final score on the Regents exam.
2)
The second part is the written portion which tests
students’ knowledge of the content covered during class time. This portion of
the course counts 85% of your final score on the Regent exam. This exam is given
during the third week in June. The date for this test is set by the NY State
Board of Regents.
