Post -Impressionism

Post-Impressionism

Started in France in the late 1800’s.

Influenced by the Impressionists and the artists of Japan

Post-Impressionism was divided into two main groups:

1)  Artists who focused on composition and formal design (Cezanne and Seurat)

2)  Artists who focused on expressing powerful human emotions (Gauguin, Van Gogh and Lautrec)

Paul Cézanne

French painter, considered the father of modern art and one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.

One of the first to intentionally distort his images.

Sometimes rendered objects in his paintings as they would be viewed from various angles.

Tried to make his paintings look as flat as the canvases that they were painted on.

Felt that the elements of design and style were more important than capturing a scene realistically.

Created and blended his fields of color by placing tiny dots of pure pigment next to each other.

Created only eight paintings during his life.

Took his color cue from the Impressionists, though his compositions were much more carefully designed.

Tended to combine different religions and cultures into one scene.

Painted simplified and somewhat primitive looking figures.

Left his wife and family to paint full time.

Only 4’10” tall, due to a pair of accidents to his legs during his youth.

Shunned his aristocratic upbringing to spend his time with the drinkers, entertainers, and prostitutes of Paris.

Was a master printer as well as painter and drawer.

Was greatly influenced by Degas and the artists of Japan.
