          Art of the latter half of the twentieth century.

          Known for it’s diversity of styles, none of which clearly dominated the art world.

          Based on largely on ideas and concepts rather than merely on execution and realism.

 

Ansel Adams

          Greatest and most famous nature photographer of the twentieth century.

          Almost always worked in black and white.

Jackson Pollock

          American painter and leader of the Action Painters, so named because of the energy exerted in the creation of their paintings.

          Nicknamed “Jack the Dripper.”

          Created abstract paintings by dripping paint from a stick or open paint can onto a large canvas. 

          Died in an automobile accident when he was 44 years old.

Pablo Picasso

        Most important and influential artist of the twentieth century. 

          Known for his Blue Period and his Rose Period.

          Created the mural Guernica as a protest to the bombing of a small Spanish town by the Germans during WW I.

          Tried to bridge the gap between art and “non-art” by making artwork from nontraditional materials.

          One of the pioneers of Cubism—a style of painting which should one scene from a variety of angles.

          Was skilled in drawing, painting, sculpting and ceramics.

Andy Warhol

          Leader of the Pop Art movement which focused on America’s obsession with celebrities and name brands. 

          Stated, “In the future, everyone will be famous for 15 minutes.”     

          Often created portraits of celebrities with bold colors silk-screened on top of black and white photos. 

          Wanted the objects and people in his compositions to resemble items on a supermarket shelf.

Andrew Wyeth

          American painter, son of famous illustrator N.C. Wyeth.

          One of the few twentieth century painters to work with egg tempera. 

          Created paintings that were extremely realistic and detailed. 

          Christina’s World, which depicts the struggles of his crippled neighbor, has been called, “America’s most popular painting.”
