          Art of the latter half of the twentieth century.

          Known for it’s diversity of styles, none of which clearly dominated the art world.

          Based on largely on ideas and concepts rather than merely on execution and realism.

 

Georgia O’Keeffe

          American painter, known for her realistic paintings of flowers and cow skulls

          Married to celebrated photographer Alfred Stieglitz, who discovered her.

          Lived most of her life in New Mexico and Lake George.

          Sometimes made the objects look abstract by showing them in extreme close up.

George Tooker

          Focused on the paranoia and fear of everyday modern life.

          Created paintings which were considered Surreal because of their dreamlike quality.

          Often showed repeated figures to suggest the reoccurring images of a nightmare.

Roy Lichtenstein

          Created paintings that looked like comic book panels.

          Along with Andy Warhol, was one of the leaders of Pop Art in the 1960’s.

          Like all other Pop Artists, tried to show the superficiality of modern America.

          Tried to make real life events, even war scenes--seem trivial by rendering them in a comical manner.

          Used stenciled Benday dots to make his paintings appear mass-produced.

Chuck Close

          Began his career doing photo-realistic portraits that were up to ten feet tall.

          Stated that he painted the photos of people, not actual people.

          Tried to de-emphasize the personality of his models, instead focusing on detail.

          Due to damage to his spinal cord, woke one day to almost complete paralysis.

          Now uses a wheelchair and a forklift to complete each painting.

          Working on a grid, Close spends one year on each painting, 

          Considers each small square of his grid paintings to be its own individual abstract painting.

M.C. Escher

          Popular illustrator, created trick images, such as waterfalls that flow uphill and staircases that lead back to where they begin.

          Often created images from the negative space created by other figures in the layout.

          Is often studied in high school and college math classes because of the precise and invariable nature of his work.
