Focused on the paranoia and fear of everyday modern
life.
Created paintings which were considered Surreal because of
their dreamlike quality.
Often showed repeated figures to suggest the reoccurring
images of a nightmare.

Created paintings that looked like comic book panels.
Along with Andy Warhol, was one of the leaders of Pop Art
in the 1960’s.
Like all other Pop Artists, tried to show the
superficiality of modern

trivial by rendering them in a comical manner.
Used stenciled Benday dots to make his paintings appear
mass-produced.

Began his career doing photo-realistic
portraits that were up to ten feet tall.
Stated that he painted the photos of people, not actual people.
Tried to de-emphasize the personality
of his models, instead focusing on detail.
Due to damage to his spinal cord, woke
one day to almost complete paralysis.
Now uses a wheelchair and a forklift
to complete each painting.
Working on a grid, Close spends one
year on each painting,
Considers each small square of his
grid paintings to be its own individual abstract painting.
