Painting mostly outdoor scenes, Monet concentrated on the effects of natural light on objects.
Would paint one scene up to twenty times, changing only the time of day or season.
Was not concerned with the object, but the light that was reflected by the object.
Painted with small brush strokes of pure color, which would appear blended when viewed from a distance.

Edgar Degas
Like Monet, would include many different hues in one color field.
Known mostly for his paintings of the ballet, theatre, horse races and other scenes with energetic figures.
Known mostly as a painter, created some of the most impressive statues of his era.
Was the first artist to display and sell pastels as finalized pieces.
Tried to capture the energy of moving figures.

Suffered from severe arthritis later in life.

Mary Cassatt
Often painted scenes of everyday family life, especially mothers and their children.
Was discovered by Edgar Degas.
Created more than 1,200 paintings and pastel drawings during her life.
Lived most of her life in France, but was responsible for bringing Impressionism to her home country of America.

Known for his “lumpy” surfaces and his attention to human anatomy.
Usually created his figures from clay or wax and then cast them in bronze.
Largely responsible for the resurgence of sculpture as a legitimate art form.
His famous Thinker was part of an 18’ relief piece called Gates of Hell, which he worked on for 37 years. THE GATES OF HELL
Unlike sculpture of the past, Rodin tried to create art that represented mankind rather than one famous figure.
