Baroque Art

Baroque Art
Began in Italy in the 1600’s and was sponsored largely by the Catholic Church.
Known for its realism, color and bold, decorative style.
More theatrical and dramatic than Renaissance art.
Tried to get the viewer emotionally involved in the scene.
Contraposto refers to rendering figures with more dramatic, action-based poses.
Chiaroscuro or Tenebrism refers to contrast of light and dark.
Refers to an era of music, art and design that is ornate and highly decorative.

        Gianlorenzo Bernini
Italian sculptor, was the greatest sculptor of the Baroque era.
Was a gifted sculptor, painter, musician, architect, and playwright.
Most famous works were David and The Ecstasy of St. Teresa.
Used action poses, called contraposto, to show scenes at their most exciting moment.
Unlike Michelangelo’s or Donatello’s, his statue of David is in the midst of the battle.

        Rembrandt van Rijn
Dutch painter, was a very successful and popular portrait artist.
Dark backgrounds and dark clothes made his figures disappear into the background.
Used lots of black, brown and amber (dull orange) in his paintings.
Was financially ruined by the time of his death, but continued to do many self-portraits.
His most famous painting, The Night Watch caused a controversy with its dark colors, partially hidden figures and the meaning of
the mysterious little girl (or guardian angel).
